Growing up, she supported me in dance rehearsals and parades, pageants and first dates. She would wait up when I would come home from dates and be genuinely interested in every minute detail. I would tell her all of my secrets, and she'd support me no matter what.
Today, I'm so glad I have a mother who will stay out late with me, eat nachos and Slurpees from 7-Eleven with me, take red-eye flights with me, talk on the phone for hours with me, stay with me when I'm sick, comfort me when I'm afraid, and be completely honest with me.
Most of all though, I'm so grateful for a mother who has been my very best friend.
I love you, Mom!

See Busy and Overwhelmed

Yes, that is where you will find my picture in the dictionary. I haven't written on this blog for so long, it seems like writing on it now might be a little embarrassing.
Oh well, I just have to come to terms with the fact that people who can keep up blogs just have more hours in the day than I seem to. It's hard not to hide in a big hole when I read all these blogs where ladies are working AND have kids. Yowza! How do they do it all?!? I always feel a little sad when I plug into someone else's blog hoping for an update and don't see one, and here I sit with practically nothing in a year! Disgraceful!
At any rate, I don't feel like I owe the world any explanation, just wondering if this blogging situation is worth keeping.
The past year has flown past-- seems like just yesterday, I was wondering when my actual "practice" would begin. I was still getting used to Scott living in Utah again. Our adorable feline-child Chico hadn't come to the family yet. We didn't have a snowblower, and I was still minus a truck.
Perhaps as a late New Year's Resolution, I could resolve to blog at least sporatically, but frankly, I think I would be setting myself up for failure.
As an update, to anyone who may actually read this blog:
I am now the sole practitioner in my own law firm in Ogden, Utah. Scott has opened his own practice in South Ogden. We have two adorable creatures, and we bought a few of our first big-ticket furniture items since we got married.
My foot is on the mend, though I don't see myself leaping tall buildings in a single bound anytime soon. I'm still teaching primary, which I love, love, love. I have almost mastered MarioKart on the Wii (which I also love, love, love). I finally took down the broken blinds in our bedroom and replaced them with curtains.
And... drumroll, please... I've had several referrals from clients who were pleased with my work. Hooray! I never thought I'd get a recommendation as a public defender. Who knew?

Old Friends and Family

I am always so happy and grateful to run into old friends-- Lezlee, I'm so glad there's only one grocery store in Providence! It was so fun to see you, even if it was only for a few minutes-- you are awesome, and I hope next time you have your cute family with you!
Over the weekend, I was able to catch up with an old friend and lots of family I hadn't seen in years. I can't wait to get together next week for my wonderful brother's wedding-- 10 days and counting!
Unfortunately, it does usually take some big event like a wedding or a baby to bring us all together again, but I'm so glad we get together!
My only question then, is this: if I'm not taking the bullet, what's the next event? Here you can also see the cute newest addition--little Mikey. He is so mischievious-- always with a piece of chocolate in his hand... or ear.
Although I missed my family here in Utah, I had such a fun Thanksgiving, and am so happy to have such a wonderful family in WV. I spent most of the time in stitches! Mark says the girls and I could be sisters. Well, yes-- we are all VERY, VERY good looking!

After our antics in WV, we took the long... very long... very, very long drive back to DC.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/Sxf1Ztbe57I/AAAAAAAAAS8/0mTmR8VGUBI/s320/DSCF2314.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411063299349342130" />
In looking for theater tickets for Thanksgiving weekend, I came upon what looked like a very special find-- an adaptation of Poe's Fall of the House of Usher and Tell Tale Heart. Well, it was 'special,' and we left at the first intermission. Interesting, very interesting!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/Sxf4i5hrHzI/AAAAAAAAATM/a7cFgVUXQ2g/s320/DSCF2321.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411066755750240050" />
On Sunday, Scott and I drove to Mt Vernon and, being as it's the holiday season, we were able to see "George Washington's Christmas Camel," or perhaps a close descendant. Bubba loves his Grandma Shauna. He always behaves so politely when he stays with her and seems not to be bothered by his nervous ticks, literally jumping for joy whenever she comes to visit.
On this particular visit however, I think he brought a sentimental tear to both mine and his grandma's eyes, for when my mother attempted to get into her car on our way to dinner, my little Bubba tried to join her in her adventure, jumping and wagging his tail gleefully.
When I called him to come back into the house, he put his tail and his head down, and looked at me with his big brown puppy-dog eyes. He did not want his grandma to leave, and reluctantly walked back into the house. He is such a sweet little-big dog.
Moments like these are so precious. They make me remember how important the little things in life are. My mother still talks about it, and I hope I can remember these wonderful memories of my favorite Bubba dog forever. As a wise cousin once quoted, "Life is not measured in minutes, it is measured in moments..."

Ahh, phone calls...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 216px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SZW1CVbfHgI/AAAAAAAAAIs/yqiYs0EO52U/s400/cartoon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302343188015422978" />

I apologize in advance to anyone who may receive this response from me, but it is the way I feel like addressing some concerns brought to my attention.

Political Question

After years of blindly supporting a political party with whom my family has been aligned, I have come to realize that I will not and cannot agree with the platforms of the party, just because it advocates them. I am, after all, an educated, competent individual with my own knowledge and personal political and religious beliefs.
Yesterday, I really understood the reason that I no longer align myself with the party in question.
In listening to our new administration's economic plans, I came to the realization that promises made will not be fulfilled. I also sat with my mouth agape at the new stimulus plan. While I'm sure that this new plan will help some people in need, it does not appear that it will reach those with incomes in the poor or impoverished range. I wonder how it is that tax credits will help those that qualify for exemption when filing taxes. For people like myself who are categorized as middle-class and comfortable, and who usually manage to dodge Federal taxes, this "stimulus package" will be of no benefit.
I have to wonder, how will I further stimulate the economy when I receive no additional funds? How then, can people in my situation possibly think this is a good idea? Are they not using all of the tax credits and deductions available, or is their tax man challenged?
Please, discuss amongst yourselves...

Parker's Bday- shout hooray!

Last Friday, my dear nephew Parker turned 6! I can't believe how time flies, but am so happy to see him growing into such a smart, strong, handsome boy. He cracks me up!
Scott and I decided to give him "snowboarding" for a present and took he and Nana to Snowbasin the week before.
We didn't get any pictures because it rained the whole time (I know, what a time for the angels to make it rain!), but we had ourselves a ball.
Uncle Scott gave each of us (yes, I joined in the fun as well) a right proper lesson. I only fell trying to de-board the lift the first few times, but unfortunately, I took poor Parker down with me! He's such a good sport...
We still had such a wonderful time, though. Both kids really took to it, Nana especially (I think being a little older helps). I even learned to turn both directions, and by the end of the damp and frigid day, managed to get all the way down the hill without a major wipeout!
Hopefully, this will be something Nana and Parker will really enjoy for years to come. I think it will- Savannah asked when she could come down again and get a season pass, and as we left to get dinner, Parker declared, "Aunt Haylee, this was the best birthday present EVER!"
I love those two adorable peanuts, and can't wait to "shred the nar-nar" with them again soon!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 97px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SYihqYeXLSI/AAAAAAAAAIc/IiUL6N0v6WI/s320/mtn_cams_w.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298662711097765154" />

Parker's antics at TGIF

When baby Jessica was born, and because Savannah wanted to be with the baby at every second, Grandma Shauna, Parker and I went to dinner at Friday's. Recently while logged in, I noticed an interesting post. Apparently in 1972, a survey was developed to let heterosexual people know what it feels like to... well, not be. The following survey is both humorous and very telling.

1. What do you think caused your heterosexuality?

2. When and where did you decide you were a heterosexual?

3. Is it possible this is just a phase and you will out grow it?

4. Is it possible that your sexual orientation has stemmed from a neurotic fear of others of the same sex?

5. Do your parents know you are straight? Do your friends know- how did they react?

7. Why do you insist on flaunting your heterosexuality... can’t you just be who you are and keep it quiet?

8. Why do heterosexuals place so much emphasis on sex?

9. Why do heterosexuals try to recruit others into this lifestyle?

10. A disproportionate majority of child molesters are heterosexual... Do you consider it safe to expose children to heterosexual teachers?

11. Just what do men and women do in bed together? How can they truly know how to please each other, being so anatomically different?

12. With all the societal support marriage receives, the divorce rate is spiraling. Why are there so few stable relationships among heterosexuals?

13. How can you become a whole person if you limit yourself to compulsive, exclusive heterosexuality?

14. Considering the menace of overpopulation how could the human race survive if everyone were heterosexual?

15. Could you trust a heterosexual therapist to be objective? Don't you feel that he or she might be inclined to influence you in the direction of his orher leanings?

16. There seem to be very few happy heterosexuals. Techniques have been developed that might enable you to change if you really want to.

17. Aside from misplacing my camera, the holidays took a lot out of me. What with holiday parties, family gatherings, weddings, babies, etc, I haven't had a lot of time to ponder what 2009 will, and more importantly should bring.
Unfortunately again this year, I didn't really ring in the new year with a bang, but more with a hiccup. We stayed home this year and toasted each other and our Bubba.
I thought it might at this point be a good idea to start thinking of proposed resolutions. Although I've never been one to make new year's resolutions, perhaps because I always think I'm on top ("I don't mean to brag, but I think I'm probably the most humble person ever."), I think it's a must this year.
This year, I am bound and determined to do each of the following:
1. Be admitted to more than one Bar. (Which type, you ask? Draw your own conclusions)
2. Fit back into my favorite jeans.
3. Visit a doctor less than three times (starting next week... I'll explain later).
4. Not pay for any major repairs on my auto.
5. Have absolutely no cavities.
6. Complete the hike to the top of Waterfall canyon without injuring myself.
7. Cook a meal from scratch-- or cook a meal at all-- for my hubby (one that even the dog will eat). Also, perfect the art of chicken galanga coconut soup (you'd understand if you'd been at my mother's for Christmas dinner).
8. Learn basic Arabic. (Being a blonde, Mormon, conservative Democrat from Utah, this could eventually come in handy).
9. Screen not one call (unless it's someone I really, really don't want to talk to).
10. Take a relaxing vacation with no pressure for any scheduled meetings.

Hair today, gone tomorrow!

Yes, my friends, on Saturday last, I got a haircut! He is though, such a sweet, smart, funny, adorable dog. Even if he were an ugly puppy, he would be adorable because of his hilarious personality.
Tonight after the U of U/ BYU game (Yea for the U- we kicked some cougar booty), Scott and I took our baby dog on a walk through the neighborhood. Bubba so enjoyed being out and about. He is a lot like "Marley" in the famous book, and now movie. He constantly tugs at his leash, only to stop suddenly to smell a blade of grass or walk all the way around a mailbox- really, he takes me on walks.
Anywho, as we walked and talked, I was reminded of the most funny story about our Bubba and I thought I should share it with anyone interested.
Last summer, Bubba had been digging in the garden while Scott was doing yardwork. Scott looked at Bubba and chastized his behavior. Minutes later, Scott turned to see a sombrero (one of our many costume changes) sitting in the garden. Wondering from whence it came, he picked it up, only to find a new hole Bubba had dug. That Bubba had actually covered up his naughtiness! When Scott asked him (yes, we talk to him like he's a person- he's a member of our family!) who put the hat there, Bubba looked to his left and to his right, as if to say, "I didn't do it, did you?"
Oh, we love us some Bubba!

Washington D.C.,... again...

Yes, again last week, I had the opportunity to visit our Nation's capitol city. It was a very short trip- only slightly more than 24 hours, but I was able to cram in a lot of the sites! I spent a lot of time at the National Gallery, the Air and Space Museum, and the Native American Museum (a relatively new venue).
Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate with me, and I spent most of Thursday with wet socks. Oh well, even with cold feet, I love visiting the spectacular sites that DC has to offer.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 216px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SSLrBSij7LI/AAAAAAAAAF8/Oh6DCMYcqwA/s320/Mills10-R1-052-24A.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270032921366097074" />
The DOJ Building. I can't believe how time has flown by- it seems like just yesterday I was in my senior year of high school and rushing to Ogden to meet my first ever niece. We have always been the best of friends. I'm still her favorite auntie, and she's still my favorite niece. Yes, that horseshoe cake was my creation!
I was so proud to be able to attend her baptism and excited that she made the choice to be baptized.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 281px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SR72TX0zYrI/AAAAAAAAAFE/psKDnIAxp08/s320/DSCF1844.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5268919426743493298" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SR72TmJUNrI/AAAAAAAAAFM/M4x3g0Csotg/s320/DSCF1845.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5268919430587627186" />
The Parker side of Nana's family.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SR72UZHxP6I/AAAAAAAAAFU/DNurY6rEXc4/s320/DSCF1846.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5268919444271349666" />
The Eggli side of Nana's family.

Camping @ Swan Flats

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SRezwk-5hgI/AAAAAAAAAE0/CYlk_0qhC4A/s400/DSCF1806.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266875936375670274" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SRezwXb1gBI/AAAAAAAAAEs/NKQFdpK2FyY/s400/DSCF1780.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266875932738945042" />
The third week in September, we took a mini-holiday weekend to Swan Flats and Bear Lake, Idaho. It is a fantastic and revolutionary film, and I highly recommend it.
My Mom and Grandma Boosa saw the show with me, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our girl's night out. I love those two so much and they are such great examples for me.

My Grandma is so strong. She never complains, she always speaks kindly about people, she never curses, and she's always encouraging... "That's alright. Yeahhh." She is the epitome of kindness and strength, and I love her very much.

My Mom is also kindhearted. She cracks me up all the time, but is especially fun to play card or board games with. Most importantly though, she is always my cheerleader, and my best friend.

These two women are beautiful! I hope I can grow up to be just like them.
Mom & Grandma, I love you!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SNQdvUp7qCI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/RHu2u6UapaM/s400/the+women.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247852164629112866" />

Finally, if you haven't seen the movie, take out one of your favorite women. Fun times were had with Reagan, MiKell, Annalise, and Jordan! I'll never forget playing dress-up with Annalise & MiKell at Grandma's house, playing Contra with Annalise & Jordan at their house (I don't think I ever beat that big snake-flame-thrower-thing at the end), or having Reagan and Annalise spend hours styling my hair for a big Homecoming dance (it looked really, really cute).
These days, although we all live in different states, I'm grateful for technology so that we can all still communicate! I'm also especially grateful for my cousin Reagan's blog, without which I might never know the going's-on in Iowa! She is such a great writer, and always has such special posts- I especially like the pictures and video of her two adorable kids. They make me laugh!
Today, in reading her current blog (I'm terribly lax in keeping mine current), I noticed yet another awesome idea Reagan had. So, in the spirit of copying those with the best ideas, I have added a playlist to my blog, also.
Thanks Reagan, I love you!<div Corey Dial

Last weekend, Scott and I were in Chapel Hill, NC, to celebrate the marriage of Scott's brother Corey to Michelle.
We were lucky to be able to get there early enough to attend the rehearsal dinner, hosted by Corey & Michelle. Among the tasty items on the menu were shrimp & grits- a signature Southern dish, followed by pecan pie. Delicious!
For the ceremony on Sunday, Corey & Michelle chose a Celtic theme. It was beautiful (as was Michelle in both her dresses). I especially liked the tying of the knot around the clasped hands- an old Celtic tradition of marriage. Another so cute part of their ceremony was when asked if they would anger each other in marriage, they both replied "I may!" -Of course, the minister clarified that was not their intent!
After the cocktail hour, we all sat down for dinner in the Old Well Ballroom (pictured below). For the rest of the evening, we got our groove on!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SL7I0xxy1HI/AAAAAAAAAB4/lVHO2ZRcDGk/s400/scott+%26+haylee.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241847825346778226" />
Scott & I at the Carolina Inn

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SL7JBH92VZI/AAAAAAAAACA/OBcLe64hsgs/s400/scott+tux.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241848037461349778" />
Hott Scott in his tux

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3L8DZdbFhB4/SL7JJYEOc0I/AAAAAAAAACI/iQnIHsnYfZo/s400/christa+%26+scott.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241848179222016834" />
Scott walking his Mom Christa down the aisle. I live close enough to my family that I get to spend time with them on the weekends.
2. Even when I call before 8 in the morning, my Mom still answers the phone as though she has been awake for hours and was hoping I'd call.
3. I am married to one of the most amazing people in the world- who else is totally hott, cracks me up on an almost hourly basis, and offers me valuable insights into common sense? As an example, when I cracked open the hood of my car this morning to check the oil and couldn't see without a flashlight, Scott was there to remind me that the garage light was off. ; )
4. I have the cutest dog in the land. Really-- everyone says so. (Refer to previously posted pics).
5. While my job can be difficult at times, I am so happy I work in the Court. Even on bad days, I can wear high heels that click on the marble floors.
Today I am grateful.

Washington D.C.-- 2 more days!!!

Two more days until we leave for D.C. to take our exams! It's gonna be good, I can tell.
Nothing very interesting has been happening lately, but Bubba has been enjoying seeing his friends at the dog park. He even met a puppy that looked just like him when he was a baby. It took me back to his puppyhood- back to the times when I could hold him on my lap. Makes me sad to think he's growing up so fast!
We found out recently he has food allergies. Yes, he does take after his Uncle Shane. Haha. The food he can eat is so expensive and gourmet! Were it not for Scott's cooking (cause I don't), he'd be eating better than we do.
If anyone reading this has a Lab who scratches a lot, check into feeding him or her food without corn or wheat in it. Our poor Bubba has been scratching since forever, and we haven't been able to pinpoint what's been wrong with him. The corn-free food is definitely worth it.
Also, as I thought it an awesome deal-- for anyone with a dog or cat, Nutro is offering coupons for a free bag of pet food. I always knew I'd miss it, but I REALLY do. I can't wait till I can start up again.
Fortunately, the holidays are coming up. I have already finished my holiday shopping. Actually, I was almost finished over the summer, but had a few last minute things to pick out. At this time of year, I feel so blessed to be where I am, to have the family I do, and the education and opportunities I do.

I came upon an inspirational thought from the J. Reuben Clark Law Society (from that other school down South), but I thought I might share it with anyone who may read my blog:

The grateful man sees so much in the world to be thankful for, and with him the good outweighs the evil. Love overpowers jealousy, and light drives darkness out of his life. Pride destroys our gratitude and sets up selfishness in its place. How much happier we are in the presence of a grateful and loving soul, and how careful we should be to cultivate, through the medium of a prayerful life, a thankful attitude toward God and man.

~Joseph F. Smith quoted in "Live in Thanksgiving Daily," by Joseph B. Wirthlin. Sigh. Only 3.5 years to my ten year high school reunion. I am getting soooo old. I already have back pain. This is ridiculous.
On a high note however, I did get to celebrate some fall birthdays recently and have had a ball with my family. I even got a singing telegram phone message today!
No word yet on any big gifts, though a small island in the Caribbean would be appropriate, if anyone's offering.
Well, aside from that, back into the courtroom it is for me. No trials yet, but too many motions to count. It's still the most exciting job I've ever had, and I finally get to live one of my dreams- wearing high heels and walking on marble floors!

We went to San Fran in August- never would have known it though, it was so freakin' cold!
